31 Days of Thanks: Day 11

This was the second year for The Crafts Report cover contest. I was guilty. I saw the call for entries last year and thought about entering, but I did not make the time to enter the contest and let the opportunity pass by. Last year an awesome fiber artist friend of mine, Kent Epler of The Laughing Boy, entered, was selected, and made it to the final round. Kent was not the ultimate winner but did an amazing job. I knew that winning was possible and when I saw the call for entries this past May for the second contest I was all in! Thank you Kent for inspiring me to enter the contest in the first...

31 Days of Thanks: Day 10

If it wasn’t for The Crafts Report magazine and the cover contest, I would not have had the opportunity to embark on this amazing journey I have been on the past five months. Thank you to The Crafts Report for selecting my artwork to be one of thirty-two finalists across the nation in the running to be featured on the cover of the October issue. It has been an incredible experience! Special thanks to Travis and Stephanie for all of their hard work as...

31 Days of Thanks: Day 9

While I continue to celebrate DyeSigns By Pamela, Inc. Month, I share today with something else very special… someTHING and someONE. Today is my father’s birthday. Before The Crafts Report cover contest started, dad did not really know anything about Facebook (and is not really all that computer savvy to begin with). While I was out of town during the first round of the competition I looked to see who had voted for me a few hours after the polls opened. I was in shock. There was my dad’s name. He somehow managed to figure out how to open a Facebook account and get to the right page in order to vote for me (nothing short of a miracle in and of itself!). When I talked to him to see how in the world he managed such a technological marvel, he proudly proclaimed, “I will have you know I was number 58!” A few weeks later I tried to do something that I thought would be pretty awesome. When I told my dad about it he said I was nuts. Although, coming from him that is typically a sign that I am about to make something amazing happen. What was I up to? I tried to get the Mayor of Louisville to declare July 5th, my birthday and the day The Crafts Report Cover Contest winner was announced, to be DyeSigns By Pamela, Inc. Day. That would have been awesome, right? At the time, I thought so too. I am happy to report that that did not happen. Yes, that’s right, I am happy it did NOT happen. My dad was right. I was nuts. I was nuts for not dreaming bigger and better. So instead, I am thrilled to be celebrating Mayor Greg Fischer proclaiming the entire MONTH of October 2013 (all 31 days of it!) to be DyeSigns By Pamela, Inc. Month in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. That is how you dream, folks… bigger and better! I have the proclamation to prove it! Tonight I am excited to be celebrating having a Magazine Release Party Extravaganza and Celebration of DyeSigns By Pamela, Inc. Month. In lieu of a birthday cake I will be serving dad nuts on a silver platter. Appropriate, right? Two peas in a pod? No. Two peanuts in a shell! Thanks dad! Happy...

31 Days of Thanks: Day 8

When I graduated from college I immediately started working on getting juried into the Kentucky Art Council’s Kentucky Crafted Program. I knew as I started my business, my affiliation with and the support of the Kentucky Arts Council and being a juried Kentucky Crafted artist would have a profound effect on my career. In addition to developing a following of retail customers, my participation in Kentucky Crafted: The Market exposed me to the wholesale marketplace and helped forge relationships with many Kentucky galleries who continue to carry my artwork today. Years later when I was ready to expand my business, I applied and was selected to represent Kentucky Crafted with a small group of other juried artists in a group booth at the Buyers Market of American Craft where I gained dozens of gallery accounts across the country. Many thanks to the Kentucky Arts Council and staff throughout the years who have impacted my career as an artist!...

I met her nearly a decade ago. She was a fellow conference attendee who happened to be a college theater professor half way across the United States. I was a recent college graduate still trying to find my way and break through the industry. We somehow got to talking and she took the time to review my resume and offer me some advice. While I have only seen her once since then at another conference a few years ago, the advice she gave me upon our first meeting still resonates in my mind on a daily basis. “If you have any intention to succeed you must be passionate about your work, persistent in your pursuit, and patient with your progress.” Thank you Claremarie Verheyen for instilling in me words to live...
